Meet Daniel McCurdy
Winner of the PFHS Entrepreneurial Spirit Scholarship (2020)
We recently heard from Daniel. Here is what he had to say:
"With the scholarship, I was able to purchase some classes from Berklee Online that enhanced my music production knowledge and provided me useful skills. I’m very grateful for the skills and I was able to obtain because of the scholarship!
The last four years have kind of been a whirlwind. I moved to Nashville and began making music full-time. I currently work at a studio in Nashville, where I do music production work and write songs.
My goals for this year is to do the same thing I’m already doing just with bigger names and bigger songs. The music industry is kind of like a ladder that you have to climb and I’m excited for the next few rungs.
The entirety of my career is entrepreneurial. I wake up every day unemployed. I have to find the people I work with and sometimes they find me. I have to keep my books in order, Find clients, Manage my business, And scale my business."

Meet Mariam Tafwed
Winner of the PFHS Entrepreneurial Spirit Scholarship (2024)
We recently heard from Mariam. Here is what she had to say:
"The Love, KK scholarship enabled me to afford the expenses of college that aren't as obvious as just tuition and housing. For example, I was able to use my scholarship towards funding my books for the semester, my meal plan, and the cost of extracurricular activities here at UVA. The scholarship was very generous, and especially as a first generation low income student, I was so lucky to be able to use it in different ways to support my personal and academic endeavors.
One really memorable experience was attending the actual 5KK race where I was presented with the scholarship. It was really awesome seeing the community come together and to see so many people from so many different walks of life participating, whether that was by running or walking the race, running a stand, or just coming out to show support.
I am currently a First Year student at the University of Virginia enrolled in the College of Arts and Science. I intend to double major in Media Studies and Public Policy and eventually go on to Law School. Thanks to the generosity of the Love, KK Scholarship, I have been able to dive headfirst and immerse myself in classes that mirror my passions and interests. I've also been able to nurture my interests by joining clubs and organizations that have allowed me to become more greatly involved on Grounds, such as writing for V Mag, volunteering with C-Ville Tulips, and participating as a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity.
One thing that I have become super passionate about has been my volunteer work with C-Ville Tulips, where we host community gatherings every week for the Afghan and Syrian women and children refugee communities in Charlottesville. During these gatherings, we engage with families through physical and health education, youth programming, and English language learning, aiming to provide support and empowerment for these communities. I've had the amazing opportunity to lead English language learning courses, and it's something that I've grown very passionate about and proud of."
